Universal Cable Productions and Dark Horse Entertainment have announced that The Umbrella Academy is being adapted as a live-action Netflix series. Based on the graphic novel by creator and writer Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and artist Gabriel Bá, the ten-episode series will follow a family of dysfunctional superheroes. The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin will work together to find out the mystery of their father’s death. Of course, trying to stay as a team will prove difficult due to their different powers and personalities.
“I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix. I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Bá and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show,” said Gerard Way.
“What drew us to The Umbrella Academy is that it’s wholly unique, visual and stylized,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “These aren’t the usual superheroes and the series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels — dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We’re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe.”
“It’s a thrill to be producing this wonderful show for Netflix,” said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, and President, Universal Cable Productions. “It’s been a passion project for the UCP development crew and we can’t wait to bring it to life.”
The Umbrella Academy comic has been praised by critics and fans.
Universal Cable Productions will be producing the TV series. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will be the executive producer and showrunner, with Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment joining as executive producers. In addition, Gerard Way will be the co-executive producer. Furthermore, the pilot is penned by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist).
If you’re heading to San Diego Comic-Con, you will have a chance to meet Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. They will be signing at the Dark Horse booth (#2615) on Friday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. To get their autographs, you will need a special wristband, which will be passed out via a random drawing at the booth on Thursday (July 20) and Friday (July 21) mornings while supplies last.
The Umbrella Academy will premiere worldwide on Netflix in 2018.
