Director Nicolas Pesce joins The Grudge reboot as director and writer
Nicolas Pesce has joined The Grudge reboot as both a writer and director for Ghost House Pictures, according to Deadline. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cruel Intentions) starred in the 2004 American version as an exchange student who moves to Tokyo and finds herself tormented by spirits of the dead. Gellar returned for a 2006 sequel, but not for the third film, which went direct to home video. The Japanese Ju-On franchise is currently at nine feature films.
Pesce made his directorial debut on the 2016 Sundance film The Eyes of My Mother. The Grudge reboot is based on a script from Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) and will be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise. Roy Lee, Joe Drake, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Erin Westerman and Romel Adam will oversee for Ghost House Pictures.
The first film in the American franchise starred Gellar, Jason Behr (Roswell, Pleasantville), KaDee Strickland (Private Practice, The Sixth Sense), Clea DuVall (Girl, Interrupted, But I’m a Cheerleader) and Bill Pullman (While You Were Sleeping, Independence Day). The second film starred Gellar, Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Ring), Arielle Kebbel (True Blood, The Vampire Diaries), Jennifer Beals (Flashdance, The L Word) and Sarah Roemer (The Con Artist, The Event). In the Ju-On franchise, the latest film Sadako vs. Kayako, has crossed over with The Ring franchise.
Pesce is currently working on the feature Piercing that he wrote and is directing. The film stars Mia Wasikowska (The Kids Are All Right, Alice In Wonderland) and Christopher Abbott (A Most Violent Year, Martha Marcy May Marlene).
