OK K.O.! Let's Play Heroes
From the people who brought you Steven Universe and Adventure Time comes a new hero who will fight to save the world. Introducing K.O. from OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, a young martial artist who strives to become a superhero like his friends and family. But he must first earn his place through constant training. When he isn’t training, K.O. works in a convenience store, owned by superhero Mr. Gar, alongside co-workers Radicles (“Rad”) and Enid. Together, they work together to battle evil robots trying to take over the world.

OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes began as a series of shorts on YouTube in 2013 and finally was given the greenlight for a series, which premieres this August on Cartoon Network (CN). In the meantime, CN is pulling all the punches for this series by releasing a console and PC game alongside the series called OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes.

From developing studio Capy Games, the game’s description is a beat-em-up brawler meets RPG in the form of the cartoon. According to the developers, the “focus will be on deep combat mechanics that provide a sweet spot of easy-to-pick-up, difficult-to-master gameplay complete with battering combos, spectacular Power Moves, devastating Hero Assists and persistent drips of unlockable abilities. The intense and cartoony fisticuffs of the combat will live under the tent of an RPG system that values empathy and relationship building among the zany characters of Lakewood Plaza Turbo just as much as aerial kicks and haymaker uppercuts.”

Nerd Reactor got to demo the game at this year’s E3. The game uses 2D animation and contains all of the locations and characters we see in the series. Furthermore in the game, you play K.O., who, like the series, is determined to be the best martial artist. In order to do so, K.O. must collect POW cards (which are basically character cards to be used for battle assists) and build relationships with the people around him. As the relationships grow stronger, the POW cards of those characters grow stronger, which will help in the fight sequences.

As he is walking around Lakewood Plaza and Gar’s Bodega, he receives missions that he must complete. For example, one mission has us finding out who is damaging Rad’s beloved van and stopping them with battles. The fight battles are pretty fun and use basic controls – jump, punch, assist, special attack, and special combos. The best thing about the game is that you can receive assistance from the other characters, using their POW card, during a battle.

The developers at Capy Games worked alongside with OK K.O. creator Ian Jones-Quartey to ensure it follows closely to the series, including keeping K.O. adorable appearance. There are even moments where you get to decide K.O.’s signature reactions during his interactions. The game is for everyone and is extremely easy to adjust to. It’s a fun game for the family and incredibly cute to play.

OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes will be available this fall on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
