NPD Report – Gamers spent $542 million on video games in May, best-selling 3DS/Switch games

According to a recent NPD report, the total amount of money that was spent in May 2017 on video game-related hardware, software, and accessories was approximately $542 million. This is down 11% since May 2016, which was due to the fact that there were not as many significant game releases during the May 2017 period. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Total: $542 million (down 11 percent from $610 million in May 2017)
  • Hardware: $147 million (up 7 percent from $138 million)
  • Console software: $271 million (down 20 percent from $339 million)
  • PC software: $12 million (down 48 percent from $23 million)
  • Accessories: $112 million (up 1 percent from $111 million)

In terms of console sales, the PlayStation 4 was the #1 console of the month, but Nintendo’s sales have soared throughout each of the other months. Hardware sales have increased by 7% since 2016, mainly due to the Switch.
