In This Corner of the World trailer showcases the harsh realities of war.
War is ugly. World War II was especially difficult for countries who are in the war. With this in mind, In This Corner of the World is looking to show the harsh realities of living in Japan during World War II. Ahead of its US premiere at the LA Film Festival, Shout! Factory and Funimation Films released a new trailer for Sunao Katabuchi’s In This Corner of the World. Check it out!
As I said on my list of films that you shouldn’t miss at this year’s LA Film Festival, anime has never been afraid of tackling some sensitive subjects. In This Corner of the World looks to tackle the events of living in Hiroshima during World War II. As you can tell from the trailer, this film deals with some heavy subject matter. That being said, the film has won several film festivals in Japan including Animation of the Year award at this year’s 40th Japan Academy Prize. In addition, director Sunao Katabuchi began his career working closely with Hayao Miyazaki. So I’m expecting the film to be visually beautiful as it pulls on the heart strings.
Sunao Katabuchi (Mai Mai Miracle) writes and directs the film adaptation of Fumiyo Kono’s manga. In addition, Masao Maruyama of Mappa Co. and Taro Maki of Genco produces the film.

The award-winning story of IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD follows a young lady named Suzu Urano, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country. This beautiful yet poignant tale shows that even in the face of adversity and loss, people can come together and rebuild their lives.
In This Corner of the World will US debut at the LA Film Festival. It will also hit theaters nationwide on August 11th.
